Suspect in custody after shooting near ACC

The shooting happened at a bus stop near the north parking lot of the ACC Highland campus.

"I’ve never seen anything like it in my 66 years,” said Eddie Denefield.

I was about 8:30 Friday morning when Denefield said he walked up to the bus stop and heard a man shouting across the street to a woman. She was asking about the bus schedule.

"Evidently she didn't understand, he kept on hollering, every 15 minutes the buses are coming every 15 minutes, and all of a sudden I heard a gunshot. And I look around and see where its coming from and there is this guy, says, you shot my leg, you shot my leg, so I looked and this guy was putting his gun in his pants, right in the front,” Denefield.

As the alleged gunman approached, Denefield said he sat on a bench and made eye contact.

"I kind of raised my eyebrows at him ... and he said; he (the victim) was talking S### to me. He kept walking and he was in no hurry."

The alleged gunman was identified by APD as 28-year-old Joseph Wayne Vallejo. The wounded man was taken to the hospital with what was described as a non-life threatening injury.

Police were in the area at the time and quickly on the scene- They spotted the suspect not far from the ACC campus and the highland metro rail station.

"They gave him some commands to actually stop so they could detain him, the suspect at that point ran on foot and what he ended up doing, the entire pursuit is about a 100 yards long, the suspect ran across Airport Blvd, crossed into the grass and ended up running southbound on the train tracks,” said APD Sgt. Charles Rohre.

Vallejo didn't get far, he tripped on the tracks and hurt his leg. Police say when they took him into custody a handgun was also recovered. Vallejo has been charged with Aggravated Assault.
