Texas State students hold vigil for sophomore found dead Monday
San Marcos police said no charges have been filed in connection with the death of Texas State student Matthew Ellis. According to the department, it could be months before they make any arrests because they are waiting for toxicology results.
Meanwhile, Texas State students met on campus for a candlelight vigil in Ellis’ honor.
Friends and classmates of the business administration major from Humble sang songs together while wearing Houston Astros gear in memory of him. San Marcos police said Ellis’ life was cut short after the Phi Kappa Psi pledge attended a Greek life party.
Authorities said an initial investigation indicates alcohol may have been a factor in the sophomore’s death. It will take about 6-8 weeks for autopsy results to confirm that. Police said once they get those results they will meet with the District Attorney to determine whether to file criminal charges.
According to police, those charges could range from providing alcohol to a minor up to manslaughter. Phi Kappa Psi released a statement saying in part, “We are heartbroken by the death of Texas State University student and Phi Kappa Psi new member Matthew Ellis.”
The executive director of the fraternity said they are working with Texas State administration and the San Marcos Police Department, who are both investigating the events that led to Ellis’ death.
Tuesday, the president of Texas State University suspended all Greek fraternity and sorority chapters while student affairs conducts a review of Greek life at the university.
Phi Kappa Psi said their Texas State chapter was suspended one week ago for unrelated matters. The fraternity will remain suspended at least until the investigation into Ellis’ death is complete.
