Three indicted in connection with attempted capital murder of Judge Julie Kocurek

A federal grand jury has indicted 28-year-old Chimene Onyeri and, two others for their roles in fraud-racketeering schemes. Prosecutors say that's what led to the assassination attempt on Travis County Judge Julie Kocurek.

Court paperwork says from 2012 to 2015 Chimene Onyeri along with Marcellus Antoine Burgin and Rasul Kareem Scott carried out money crimes during that time period in Austin, Houston and in Louisiana. The indictment has 11 counts including: conspiracy to participate in an enterprise engaged in a pattern of racketeering activity, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft

"I did find there was a large group of individuals that was involved in this theft ring. The numbers are in the high hundreds of people that are involved in this ring unfortunately I was only able to identify 27 of them," said Det. Joel Martin of Rollingwood PD back in November last year.

Onyeri is locked away in  the Travis County jail. Rasul Scott is locked up in New Orleans, but expected to be transported to U.S. Western District Court. The third suspect, Marcellus Burgin got away after a chase in Houston. Authorities are looking for him and hoping to give him similar charges.

"This multiagency investigation was a diabolical  that went from a multi-faceted fraud scheme, to an attempt on the life of a state district judge."

Court records say Kocurek was about to have Onyeri put in prison, so he and the accomplices  attempted to kill her the night of November 6, 2015. She suffered injuries from multiple gunshot wounds when she was ambushed outside her West Austin home.

"For the, i guess, it was about 30 seconds of extreme horror and violence that me and my son and my family members felt, all of the goodness and love that has poured out, the thousands of minutes far outweigh the evil of this world," said Kocurek right after her recovery.

Kocurek's passion for justice and what she believes to be a higher power put her back on the bench.

“I feel there was true diving intervention that saved my life November 6.”
Marcellus Burgin is a fugitive. Houston police are offering $5,000 to anyone who has information on his whereabouts.
