Trial for death of retired IBM executive

Travis County jurors are hearing the details surrounding the 2015 murder of a retired IBM executive. The man on trial for the crime is also in trouble for abandoning and endangering the grandson of the victim.

In video from November 19th, 2015, Irwin Pentland is seated in an interview room at the Austin Police Department. 12 hours after police found the body of Pentland's friend, 75-year-old Phillip Liberty.

Pentland tells Detective Derek Israel-- he was at Liberty's home the day before. “We talked a little about Lucas [Liberty’s son]. we talked a little bit about the business,” said Pentland.

Pentland explained a story about Liberty requesting assistance picking up his two-year-old grandson, whom he cared for. “He said he didn't really have a back up,” said Pentland.

Pentland says although Liberty never phoned him to confirm, he picked up the child from daycare. That night, Pentland says after failing to reach Liberty he left the boy at his mother's house unattended. “He was on the floor. I made a mat for him on the floor,” said Pentland. "I hate to say it, but I left [the child] alone while he was asleep."

The next day, Pentland returned to the home to pick up the boy.

He then dropped him off at daycare.

It was around that time that officers were first called to Liberty's home.

Israel testified what he saw.

“In the living room area there was an area where I found a significant amount of dried blood and it it appeared there had been some efforts taken to cover it up,” said Israel. Sometime during November 18th-- the day when Pentland says he came to visit-- Liberty was shot in the head.

Detectives say his body was dragged from the living room to the garage.

In the garage was a Mercedes Benz that had been lined with loose pieces of carpeting.

A bag was placed over Liberty's head as if in attempt to control the flow of blood.

After listening to Pentland's account of his day-- Israel cut to the chase collecting DNA and taking custody of his phone. "There's no accident that we're talking today. My investigation conclusively shows you're responsible for Phil's death,” said Israel.

The medical examiner testified Wednesday afternoon. She said Liberty tried to shield himself from the gunfire with his arm. The gun would’ve been within inches of his face.
