Turkey Trot takes over downtown Austin

It's time again for the long time Austin Thanksgiving tradition as the 26th annual Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot takes over downtown.

The event kicks off with a five mile run, one mile walk and the Stepping Stone Kids K. It all started at 9 a.m.

All of the proceeds from the event benefit Caritas of Austin which helps people move out of poverty toward self sufficiency.

Since it Thundercloud Subs began the event it has helped raise nearly $3 million for Caritas. Just last year it raised around $295,000.

The Turkey Trot is the largest five mile run in Texas with more than 250,000 runners an walkers and 650 volunteers.

The event does mean there will be road closures.

The one mile walk run starts at Riverside and South First, heads north on Lavaca, across 5th Street, down Colorado and back over to South First on Cesar Chavez.

The five mile route also starts at South First and Riverside, heads north on Lavaca up to 15th Street, over to the Mopac Frontage Road, south to Cesar Chavez and back to South First.
