Drunk driver charged after running from police and crashing at Rundberg and Lamar

Two people are in the hospital after a crash Thursday morning. Police believe one of them was driving drunk. It happened at the intersection of Rundberg and Lamar this morning after 2am.

Austin police say officers were finishing up with another call when they heard a crash nearby at the La Preferida Sports Bar on North Lamar.

The bar owner says the car came crashing into the yellow posts and took out one of their accessible parking signs. APD says the driver actually hit a pedestrian there too. That person is ok.

Police say a security guard flagged them down. That's when they saw 24-year-old Hispanic male Juan Carlos Balderas speed off in his damaged white Jeep. They chased him down Lamar.

Balderas ran the lights at the Rutland intersection and then the Rundberg intersection. That's when he T-boned a woman in a black Honda Accord. The woman was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.  Balderas was taken to the hospital too.

"He is currently in the hospital.  They have an officer there with him now and he is being charged...he hasn't been booked in yet because he's still in the hospital.  But he is being charged with aggravated assault motor vehicle, evading and also intoxication assault," Destiny Winston with the Austin Police Department said.

UMC Brackenridge representatives told us this afternoon the woman Balderas hit is listed in fair condition.
