According to a letter from Eanes ISD, a female math teacher at Westlake High School under investigation for reportedly having inappropriate electronic and social media communications with a male student. The teacher, who's identity has not been released, was removed from the classroom and will be fired pending approval from the school board.
FOX 7 received the following letter from Eanes ISD. The letter was sent to staff and parents in regard to the incident:
Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,
The safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority in Eanes ISD. Often, I am able and privileged to share the accomplishments of students and staff. Unfortunately, there are also times when I must also share information that is unpleasant; but as a school district, we truly value transparency and want to keep our community informed as much as the law allows.
On Friday, October 23, Westlake High School Administrators received an initial report of inappropriate electronic and social media communications between a female math teacher and a male student at Westlake High School.
The Principal notified me, the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, as well as the District’s General Counsel, and we immediately began an investigation. The teacher was removed from the classroom and her employment will be terminated, pending Board consideration. In addition, the matter was reported to Child Protective Services (CPS), the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and we will notify the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
Please know that all Eanes ISD teachers are required to have a background check, including fingerprinting; teachers are not allowed into Eanes schools without passing a background check. With regard to this individual, all background checks were cleared prior to her employment by Eanes ISD three years ago.
Moving forward, we will continue to cooperate and share information with CPS and law enforcement. We have offered counseling services to the student involved, as well as to any other students who may feel they would like to have a conversation to discuss their thoughts or concerns.
As a school district, we have a trust with the community that we take seriously and we will continue to stress that all of our staff-student interactions must be appropriate. In the very rare instances where we find that not to be the case, we will be vigilant and take immediate action. To that end, if you ever witness or experience inappropriate situations with Eanes ISD staff members, please report it to school or district officials immediately.
Finally, I want to stress my firm belief that we have one of the most professional and talented staff in the State of Texas. I hope that you will not let this incident serve in any way as a reflection on the wonderful teachers and staff that serve our community on a daily basis.
