Austin Police have I-35 rock throwing suspect in custody

UPDATE: The Austin Police Department has one person in custody for being involved in throwing a rock and other objects onto the lower deck and service road of I-35. Although this person has been taken into custody, APD does not believe this suspect is responsible for all 83 rock throwing cases.

APD released the following news release:

The Austin Police Department responded to a disturbance call in the 3200 blk of N. IH -35, northbound service road at 8:47 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2016  At this time, one person is in custody for being involved in throwing a rock and other objects onto the lower deck and service road. Although this person has been taken into custody, APD does not believe this suspect is responsible for all 83 rock throwing cases. This is all preliminary information and APD is actively working on the investigation. Once more information is made available, we will let the public know.

APD does ask that everyone remain vigilant when traveling on IH-35 near the upper and lower deck.

Here are some things to remember:

• If you are traveling along the upper and lower deck of IH-35, please be aware of your surroundings as you are driving
• Don’t just look straight ahead. Scan in all directions and use your mirrors to look behind you on all sides. Do this as safely as possible.
• If you can use an alternate route, then do so
• Spread the word to your loved ones or anyone you know that may be traveling in the Austin area about these incidents
• If you become a victim, pull over safely and call 9-1-1 immediately
• Do not touch the area of impact on the vehicle or handle the rock
• Try to know the time and exact location of the impact

Austin police have a man in custody this afternoon in connection with a reported rock throwing case on I-35.

Rock throwing incidents along I-35 first began back in 2014. Police say the number of cases is more than 80 now.

Austin police did confirm they were responding to a reported rock throwing on I-35.  When FOX 7 arrived at the 3400 block of I35 a suspect was in the back of the patrol car. 

Ginger Moore, the store manager of 'Dreamers DVD' showed us some surveillance footage of the suspect being arrested. 

Ginger like many others in Austin is hoping this arrest is the real deal.  She's thinking that $25,000 reward may have made a difference.

“You know putting the big reward out might have been the beginning of it all so. So you're hoping this is the guy?  I'm hoping this is one of them I really think there's more than one.”

Austin say they will be releasing more information later this afternoon.

Austin Police on the scene of a possible rock throwing incident near 32nd and the northbound lower deck lane of I-35.

Witnesses say they saw a Hispanic man wearing a University of Texas t-shirt throw something on I-35.

APD reports that a fist sized rock was found in the lower deck lane.
