Man arrested for giving children soda can filled with drugs

Austin ISD police say a man has been arrested after giving children drugs hidden inside a soda can outside of an East Austin school.

According to police, on February 11th Octavio Coleman approached a 7-year-old boy. The boy was headed to Zavala Elementary School with his two older sisters.

The boy told authorities that Coleman gave each of them what he called a "goodie bag" telling the boy to give the bag to his teacher on Valentine's Day.

The boy also said that Coleman gave him a can that he thought was a soda can and told him he could drink it when he got home.

Surveillance video from the school on the day of the incident shows Coleman giving the children the bags. It also showed Colen walking down the hallways of the school.

Later that day, the school received an anonymous phone call from a woman who said that the boy had drugs in his backpack. School officials did not find any drugs. According to court documents, the woman called back and said that the drugs were hidden inside the soda can. The can is commonly known as Can Safe, a can designed to resemble a soda can that a person can use to hide valuables.

The victim's mother identified Coleman as a friend of her ex-boyfriend to authorities.

This isn't Coleman's first run-in with the law. He is known to police from prior arrests.

He is being held in the Travis County Jail on $150,000 bond on a charge for delivery of a controlled substance to a child. That's a second-degree felony charge.
