Meet the first baby born in Austin in 2015

AUSTIN, Texas - Charles Paul Welch is 8 pounds, 2 ounces and 21 inches long.

He's the first baby born in 2015 within the St. David's Healthcare System of Hospitals.

His mother Julie Welch says she went into labor last night around seven and Charles made his debut at 12:16 a.m.

Welch says her son came two weeks early and she was surprised to learn about his new distinction.

"I was absolutely shocked because they mentioned that in the delivery room and I said 'No way, there's no way that this is the first baby in all of Austin' but it turned out he was so I was very surprised when they told me this morning," she said.

It might be hard for some to agree to do a TV interview right after giving birth but Julie says it's something her son can have forever.
