Police investigating officer involved shooting

The names of the man killed and the officer involved in a shooting this morning have been released. Police are investigating the officer involved shooting that happened in the area of Slaughter Lane and Congress.

Police identified the man killed as 61-year-old Robert Mesch and the officer who opened fire as Daniel Hannah. Hannah has been with APD for two years and is on paid administrative leave per protocol.

Police say it all started at around 3:30 a.m. this morning when police received a call from Mesch's home. Mesch's wife said her husband was suicidal and police say during the call she screamed and the call dropped. Police say they arrived to the home and Mesch's wife was okay. Officers were able to spot Mesch's vehicle and a pursuit began.

Police say Mesch's car was spiked near William Cannon but Mesch continued to flee. Eventually Mesch pulled into the Walgreens parking lot near Slaughter and Congress. Police say Mesch got out of the car and pointed a revolver at Officer Hannah and that's when Hannah shot Mesch. Mesch was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Art Acevedo says everything was caught on video. Chief Acevedo says it was potentially a suicide by cop.

Slaughter Lane between Cullen and I-35 was shut down for several hours as the investigation went on. Drivers were urged to either avoid the area or take alternative routes. The area was reopened at around 9:30 a.m.
