1 dead, 2 arrested in Houston armored car robbery sting

HOUSTON (AP) -- Two men have been arrested and a third has been shot and killed by Houston police after gunmen attempted to hold up an armored car that authorities were using in a surveillance operation to combat violent armored car robberies.

Police Chief Art Acevedo says one of the robbers opened fire with an assault-style weapon late Wednesday morning and an officer returning gunfire wounded him. He was treated at the scene and died later at a hospital.

Names of the victim and the two men in custody have not been immediately released.  The chief says there's a "high likelihood" they'd been involved in similar holdups.

Acevedo says the surveillance operation is part of a joint effort with the FBI to address Houston's ranking as the nation's armored car robbery capital.
