Fire rips through a South Houston apartment building day after Christmas

Fire officials said it happened around midnight at the Ashton Place II Apartments located at near Allen Genoa and Avenue H.

According to official’s residents reported smelling smoke and hearing smoke alarms going off  in the complex and immediately called the fire department. 

When fire officials arrived the flames had spread to the entire complex destroying roughly 30 units. 

Officials are crediting residents for alerting other residents of the fire and said as a result there were no reported deaths or injuries. 

It took firefighters around 4 to 6 hours to contain the fire.
