Group wants record-setting longhorn to reside in Fort Worth Stockyards

A group wants to have a record-holding Longhorn with horns ten feet long make its home in Fort Worth.

The Fort Worth Herd is a part of a twice-a-day cattle drive through the history. The animals celebrate a history that dates back to the 1800s when longhorns were driven up the Chisholm Trail.

The Herd and its educational programs are funded by the non-profit Friends of the Fort Worth Herd. There are presently 16 longhorns in the program, but officials have their eyes on a new prize.

A steer named Bluegrass presently resides in Greanleaf, Kansas and has horns measuring at 119 inches. That’s three feet longer than the Fort Worth Herd’s biggest longhorn.

Bluegrass will be in Fort Worth in late September when he goes up for auction. Friends of the Fort Worth Herd want to raise up to $100,000 dollars to win Bluegrass.

Majestic Realty, the group behind a $175 million Stockyards development project, is on board with the idea.

"We're going to do anything we can to get that steer where it belongs in Fort Worth, Texas,” said Josh Wheeler, Majestic Realty.

The auction is the first time in more than 20 years there’s been a sale of registered longhorns in the stockyards.
