Fort Worth PD: Suspect dead after shooting 2 officers

- Police say a suspect is dead after shooting two Fort Worth police officers.

The shooting happened in a neighborhood near I-20 and Granbury Road Friday night around 8:30 p.m. at a home.

Fort Worth police say they originally responded to a call about a suicide attempt.

Officers found a deceased, elderly male with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Then, someone told officers that another person was inside the same room where the elderly male was found and had gone inside a backyard storage unit, Fort Worth police said.

When officers opened the doors to the shed, someone from inside began firing at officers, hitting two of them. SWAT officers attempted to get the person inside the shed to surrender. Tear gas was eventually used, as a part of the plan to get the person to exit. That person was killed. It is not known if the wounds were self inflicted or if the person died from police gunfire, Fort Worth police said.

Police identified the injured officers as Ray Azucena, a probationary officer, and Xavier Serrano, a field training officer.

Police say Serrano was shot multiple times in his upper torso, arms and shoulder. He had x-rays Saturday morning and is scheduled for surgery.

Azucena was shot in the chest. He was released from the hospital early Saturday morning.

Both officers were wearing body armor, Fort Worth police said.

Both of the officers were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.

Police say there have been at least three previous domestic violence calls between a father and a son at the home.
