Two people dead after crash in Lakeway

Authorities said a three vehicle crash left two people dead and others injured in Lakeway.

A spokesman for the Travis County Sheriff's Office said it all started when a deputy witnessed a driver run a red light at Anderson Mill Road and FM 620. According to the deputy, the driver was going well over the speed limit and the officer was unable to catch up to the driver for several miles.

Around the Mansfield Dam the deputy was able to get the driver back within view. The deputy said at that point the driver was swerving all over the road. Then the driver crossed over the roadway and collided with oncoming traffic.

The crash happened near the intersection of Murfin Road and FM 620.

Two people were pronounced dead on scene. Deputies said others were transported to area hospitals by Star Flight and ambulance.

"We're still trying to figure out why this individual went into oncoming traffic. So, we're looking at all the evidence on the scene, trying to collect evidence and at this point, piece everything together and try to figure out exactly what happened," said Roger Wade, public information officer for the Travis County Sheriff's Office.

The accident caused some major backups on FM 620 Saturday afternoon. The roadway has been cleared.

The Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the collision.
