Risk of salmonella prompts Diamond nuts recall

- Several varieties of Diamond of California® brand packaged macadamia nuts are being voluntarily recalled for possible salmonella contamination.

The recall includes 4 oz. Diamond of California® Chopped Macadamia Nuts and 2.25 oz. Diamond of California® Macadamia Halves and Pieces, and refers to multiple production codes, which can be seen on the FDA's website

The FDA said no illness had been reported ahead of the recall, which was the result of testing by a FDA-contracted laboratory which revealed that a 4 oz. package of Diamond of California® Chopped Macadamia Nuts contained Salmonella.

Diamond® of California's parent company, Snyder's-Lance, Inc. said the two types of packaged macadamia nuts were distributed to retail stores nationwide.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
