Rep. Steve Scalise in fair condition after another surgery

- House Majority Whip Steve Scalise underwent another surgery Thursday to treat an infection he has been dealing with related to the wounds he suffered in a shooting last month during a congressional baseball practice in Virginia.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise is in fair condition and “will require careful monitoring to see if and when further interventions are necessary.”

Scalise was readmitted into the Intensive Care Unit last week because of the deep tissue infection he contracted, which led to surgery on July 6. Following that surgery, doctors said he “tolerated the procedure well."

On Wednesday, Scalise was released from the ICU, but was still being treated with antibiotics. Doctors said Scalise needs to get rid of the infection before he can be transferred to an in-patient rehabilitation facility.

Scalise was one of five people injured after 66-year-old James Hodgkinson opened fire at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, during a Republican baseball practice on June 14.

The 51-year-old was shot in the hip and the bullet went across his pelvis, fracturing bones and injuring internal organs along the way. He has had several surgeries and procedures since then.

Hodgkinson was killed during the incident.
