More than 100 dogs and cats were checked in at the Atlanta Humane Society. Officials say all of the animals will be evaluated by a veterinarian, and are expected to be made available for adoption within a day or so.

Shelters in Texas had to remove the animals because they are overwhelmed with displaced animals from the storm. The Houston SPCA has an estimated 1000 animals that are waiting to be reunited with their families.

The cats brought to Atlanta will be adopted out by local rescue agencies. The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter took in a dozen of the felines. The Atlanta Humane Society will handle the dog adoptions.

Representatives from Texas shelters outside of Houston drove almost 24 hours to bring the animals to Atlanta. Dozens of local volunteers were here to greet them when they arrived they say they were more than willing to get up early to help out.

The Atlanta Humane Society plans to send six staffers to Houston next week to assist with the relief effort. Members of the animal shelter community say in times of need they all pitch in to help each other.

Last week, 29 dogs and cats from Louisiana arrived in metro Atlanta. The Atlanta Humane Society's West Midtown location worked with the Louisiana SPCA to help save animals affected by the natural disaster.

The Atlanta Humane Society is open Monday through Friday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Authorities on Thursday increased the toll of Harvey-related deaths to 39, and the Texas Department of Public Safety said more than 37,000 homes were heavily damaged and nearly 7,000 were destroyed.
