Hamlet cancels July Fourth events over threats of violence

The City of Hamlet has canceled its Fourth of July festivities due to security and safety concerns, officials said.

"Due to heightened safety concerns and recent security developments that have been brought to the City's attention, the City believes that this decision is in the best interest of the safety of our citizens and the community," city officials said in a statement.

"I hate that it happened because you have kids that are looking forward to this here event that's been going on for years," one resident said.

"It's a big shock to the city because a lot of people are looking forward to coming out here and having fun with their family and friends," another resident added.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, threats to endanger the public were made recently in connection with an ongoing homicide investigation. The homicide happened on Wednesday, June 28, at the Circle B Convenience Store off Earl Street.

"We'll still miss this event but as I said if it's for safety reasons and there's a threat they have to take precautionary measures."

No arrests have been made. The decision to cancel the fireworks is final, according to police.
