In Georgia: two more travel-related Zika virus cases

- The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) confirms two more travel-related cases of Zika virus, in Georgia. That brings the total number in the state to three.

Both people have recovered and neither is pregnant. One traveled to Guatemala and El Salvador. The other visited Colombia.

There are other Georgia residents, who have traveled to areas where there are Zika outbreaks, awaiting specimen test results. DPH cautions pregnant women and travelers who plan to travel to countries where Zika virus transmission has been confirmed.

Still, there is not a vaccine or medicine that can treat Zika so travelers are asked to take precautions to protect themselves:

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
  • Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or IR3535 (use as directed)

  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents)

  • Stay and sleep in screened-in or air-conditioned rooms
