Lawsuit claims P&G's Old Spice deodorant causes rashes, burns

A lawsuit filed claims that Procter and Gamble's 'Old Spice' deodorant causes severe chemical burns and rashes.

The lawsuit claims to seek class- action status and more than $5 million in damages.

The complaint names 13 Old Spice products, including, Old Spice Lionpride and Arctic Force High Endurance deodorants, that it says have affected "hundreds, if not thousands, of consumers."

Multiple people have posted photos to Facebook and online to Consumer Affairs with what they describe as painful, severe rashes they have suffered after using Old Spice products.

"I used the Old Spice pure sport and after couple of days my underarms were raw," said one reviewer. "It burned so bad that I had to hold ice packs under my arms for a couple of days because of the burn."

Another complaint reads, "It took the skin right off my arm pits. It was truly unreal. It made them blister and bleed. There should be a total recall on this deodorant because of the chemical burns."

A spokesman for P&G told Buzzfeed News that what people are describing as burns are actually skin reactions to the deodorant.

“First and foremost, we’re 100% confident Old Spice is safe to use,” Damon Jones said. “Tens of millions of guys use our products safely and without incident every year. We believe its 0.01% of consumers will have any type of reaction and that’s not unusual to what we see in any type of product.”

P&G says that if people have experienced a reaction, they should discontinue use.
