6.5 magnitude quake hits off the coast of Ferndale

- A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday, jolting residents of the coastal town of Ferndale but bringing no immediate reports of damage or injuries

There were two aftershocks. According to USGS, one 5.0 magnitude aftershock occurred at 8:32 a.m. while the other was a 4.9 magnitude at 8:33 a.m. 

Initially the USGS reported the quake had a magnitude of 6.8 but that was later downgraded. 

The quake occurred at 6:50 a.m. on Thursday. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center there are no watches or warnings. 

According the USGS's "Did you feel it" map, the quake was felt 400 miles north in Portland, Oregon and 350 miles south in Salinas, CA.


KTVU viewers all over the Bay Area reported feeling the earthquake.

Kim Oliff wrote on our Facebook page the quake shook her awake in Hillsborough. 

Other KTVU viewers reported feeling the quake in Redwood City, San Jose and San Francisco.
