Retail chain Target says it is removing signage that sorts items for sale based on gender.

The chain announced the move Friday in an effort to "make our stores more gender-inclusive."

Target says its customers suggested products in the toy, home and entertainment departments were unnecessary.

On its website, Target writes: "In the kids’ Bedding area, signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls, just kids. In the Toys aisles, we’ll also remove reference to gender, including the use of pink, blue, yellow or green paper on the back walls of our shelves. You’ll see these changes start to happen over the next few months."

Gender labels will remain in the children's clothing section department.
