UT students collect pennies for a good cause

UT students collected a record breaking amount of pennies for a good cause.

The more than $5,000 worth of pennies was on display at Camp Mabry Sunday. The coins were formed in the shape of the state of Texas.

Students teamed up with the LIVESTRONG Foundation to collect the coins as well as organize a 5K race.

The students say what makes the event stand out is where the money is going.

While a lot of funding goes to cancer research, the freshmen wanted to do something for those who need to get back on their feet after fighting cancer so the money raised will go toward helping cancer survivors.
