Vigil for Murdered Army Sergeant

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - A community is remembering a U.S. Army Sergeant who was gunned down near an Atlanta homeless shelter after helping someone in need.

Sgt. Atting Eminue’s family and friends said the young service member had just given a man a pair of shoes. It happened Sunday near the Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless shelter on Peachtree Street. Atlanta police said the man shot the Eminue several times.

Friday night outside that homeless shelter, friends and family held a vigil for the man they said was a dedicated solider, father and friend. His family told FOX 5 his pride and joy was his four-year-old son.

Eminue came to the United States from Nigeria. He survived three tours in Afghanistan. His son's grandmother said he wanted to serve overseas while his son was young, so he could be there for him when he got older.

A viewing for Sgt. Eminue will be Wednesday, with funeral services Thursday at Gregory Levett and Sons Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
