Illuminate Austin is an evening walk in Mueller Lake Park, along a path lined with luminaries.
It benefits SafePlace, which provides shelter and services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Austin.
In 2013 there were more than 8,500 domestic violence cases and 785 sexual assault cases reported in Travis County.
Those who participated in the walk, showed survivors that they aren't alone.
But we're told there's more we can do.
"The crimes of sexual and domestic violence are almost epidemic. One-in-four women in their lifetime will be a victim. Those are huge numbers. Too many children and too many men are also impacted; then of course it ripples through the entire family. These are big issues and we can do something about it. We ask everybody to kind of take a pledge; think it's on me, what can I do?" says Julia Spann, executive director, SafePlace.
The money raised from Saturday's event will help SafePlace with their service, prevention, and educational programs.
