Glamour names 'Emily Doe,' survivor in Brock Turner case, among Women of the Year

- Glamour Magazine has named "Emily Doe," the victim in the Brock Turner sexual assault case, as one of their women of the year.

The magazine sites the fact that this young woman's experience, and more importantly her response to it, generated a national conversation on sexual assault. The article says Emily Doe inspired other victims of sexual assault to see themselves as survivors instead of victims.

Emily Doe's statement she read aloud during Brock Turner's sentencing was later published and read more than 11 million times.

Turner was sentenced to six months in prison for sexually assaulting Emily Doe while she lay unconscious behind a dumpster on the Stanford University campus.

The sentence set off a firestorm of criticism from victims’ advocates who said it was far too light for the crime, and that judge Aaron Persky was too lenient with Turner.

The controversy led to a recall effort to remove Persky from the bench.

The article in Glamour Magazine, in which Emily Doe herself speaks out about the aftermath of the sentencing, includes a link to the recall effort.

In the Glamour article Emily Doe says, "I yelled half of my statement. So when it was quickly announced that he’d be receiving six months, I was struck silent. Immediately I felt embarrassed for trying, for being led to believe I had any influence. The violation of my body and my being added up to a few months out of his summer."

She also wrote about photos of her being leaked and being called "not pretty enough" by Internet trolls. In the Glamour article she wrote, "damn I wish the world could see me. I wish you could see my big, beautiful head and huge eyes. Perhaps now you are at home imagining me looking like some sort of bloated owl. That’s all right."

Emily Doe's main statement is that "victims are survivors, and survivors are going to be doing a hell of a lot more than surviving."
