Elderly woman skydives to honor veteran husband

Friday was a day for people around the country to honor the country's veterans, and for one woman, who is 90 years old, she chose a different way to pay tribute.

She decided to go skydiving.

"I think if I don't do it now, I may never do it," said Lorry Phillips, who decided to go skydiving to honor her late husband.

It's safe to say that Phillips did not have a typical Friday morning. She got suited up before she jumped out of a plane.

"I'm a little nervous, but I've taken risks before," said Phillips.

Phillips' husband, Bill, passed away last year, aged 92. He was a World War II veteran, and served in the Army's 82nd Airbourne. Besides paying tribute to her husband, Phillips is also paying tribute to all who served.

"I had a son that died and killed in Vietnam. I have three sons, Greg, Bob, and Rick who were in the service, and I also have a grandson that's in the service," said Phillips.

Phillips jumped from 10,000 feet with a 45-second free fall. The parachute then opened, and it took five minutes for Phillips to coast to the ground, and land safely. Phillips' family anxiously wanted for the landing, on terra firma.

"She's like the Energizer Bunny, and she still plays golf twice a week," said Bob Phillips, Lorry's stepson. "A lot of us have to run to keep up with her, but whatever she does never surprises us."

Phillips said while she has no future plans to jump again, she may consider it for her 95th birthday. Besides the thrill, Phillips had a message for those who have service, and those still serving.

"Stay healthy and wise, and love your country," said Phillips.
