Injured bald eagle rescued by officer in Potomac

- A bald eagle is on the mend after it was rescued by a Montgomery County Animal Service Division officer Thursday morning.

Officer Jennifer Gill responded to the area of River Road and Riverwood Driver in Potomac after the Emergency Communications Center received a call for a report of the injured eagle at around 8:45 a.m.

After meeting with a resident, Gill located the eagle in the woods suffering from an injury that made it unable to fly. The officer wrapped the eagle in towels, and with the help of a Maryland Department of Natural Resources officer, the bird, which was named "Trust" by Officer Gill, was transported to the Owl Moon Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation center specializing in birds of prey located in Boyds.

According to the Owl Moon Raptor Center, the female bald eagle had a left shoulder injury and had some internal bleeding.

In a Facebook post, the wildlife rehabilitation center wrote:

“She was likely hit by a vehicle on River Road, probably feeding on a nearby roadside deer carcass and sustained some impact injuries. There was some internal bleeding and a shoulder injury. She appears to be feeling a little better tonight after receiving lots of fluids, and medicine for pain and inflammation. We'll take her to Bennett Creek Animal Hospital for x-rays and further evaluation when she is stable and stronger. Keep fingers crossed she continues to improve!”
