Max Scherzer pitches second no-hitter of the season in Nats win over Mets

- Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer pitched his second no-hitter of the 2015 season Saturday night against the New York Mets. Scherzer becomes the sixth major league pitcher to throw two no-hitters in the same season.

Former Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay had one in the regular season and a second in the playoffs in 2010. The last MLB pitcher to throw two no-hitters in the same regular season was Nolan Ryan in 1973.

Scherzer threw his first no-hitter of 2015 in June against Pittsburgh. The 2013 AL Cy Young winner with Detroit is in his first year with the Nationals.

Scherzer struck out a team-record 17 batters in the Nationals 2-0 win over the NL East champion Mets, as part of a doubleheader sweep. Only one batter reached base against Scherzer, and that came when third baseman Yunel Escobar bounced a throw for an error on Kevin Plawecki's leadoff grounder in the sixth inning.

Scherzer struck out nine straight batters before Curtis Granderson hit an easy popup to Escobar to end it on his 109th pitch.
