Texas State introduces new head football coach

New Texas State head football coach Everett Withers seems to have a plan for everything, even how to celebrate championships.

At a press conference, Wither said, “We actually have trophy kissing practice! I’m not kidding! We actually try to teach our kids how to do it right.”

Guess that’s what 25 years of coaching under smart met like Mack Brown and Urban Meyer will do for you.

Now Withers is ready to leave his own mark on Bobcat football.

On January 7, Texas State Athletics Director Larry Teis welcomed Withers as the school’s 16th head football coach in San Marcos.

Withers spent the previous two seasons at FCS program James Madison going 19-7 and winning a Colonial Conference title last season.

James Madison was just the latest of many stops. Before heading there, Withers was defensive coordinator at Ohio State for Urban Meyer. That followed a 7-6 stint as North Carolina’s head coach when took over for Butch Davis.

Withers also brings seven years of NFL experience and he coached UT defensive backs under Mack Brown in the late 1990’s.

FOX 7’s Dennis de la Pena sat down and spoke with Withers. You can watch the full one-on-one interview here.
