Makeup brush cleaning tips: Avoiding breakout-causing bacteria

- If you are dealing with breakouts, you'll want to make sure you're cleaning your makeup brushes regularly as they could be teeming with bacteria.

Makeup artist Quon Wilson took swabs of makeup brushes and other beauty products to grow cultures for five days, testing for bacteria growing on them. She discovered they were infested with breakout-causing bacteria.

To clean your brushes, Wilson suggested using a brush mitt saturated with soap that slides on your hand and is specifically designed for cleaning makeup brushes. If you do not have a brush mitt, a sponge can also get the job done.

Wilson said dish soap works effectively, but if you want create your own solution specifically formulated for cleaning makeup brushes, try combing one part dish soap with one part olive oil.

Wilson added that it's important to sanitize all of your beauty products including blush, lipstick, and makeup bags by using sanitizing mists that do not compromise the quality of the products.

She also encouraged makeup users to clean their brushes as often as possible, but once a week should be enough to prevent brush bacteria from causing breakouts.
