Flash Flooding likely this week: Travel & Emergency kit tips

Heavy rain and flooding has already proven to be deadly this month and with more rain in the forecast, flood dangers will get worse before they get better.

During a flood event water can cover a road in a hurry. Whether the roadway is barricaded or not, if you see water rushing over the pavement find a different route!

Between one and two feet of water is all it takes to push most vehicles off the road into even deeper water.
In addition to being potentially deadly, it's also illegal. Moving barricades can result in a fine up to $2,000 and jail time.

The Red Cross recommends putting together an emergency kit with a three-day water supply. That's one gallon per person per day.

You'll also want three-days worth of non-perishable food, a first aid kit, and any prescription medications for you and your family.

Other items to include: extra cash, cell phone chargers, essential pet supplies, a battery powered radio, extra house and car keys, and a change of clothes or two.

In case your home does flood you'll want to make sure you have the important documents like birth certificates, the deed or lease to your home, and insurance policy information. A camera for photographing any damage would also be useful.

Pack this before the storm and you'll be ready to go right away in case you get evacuated.
