2 adults, 1 child dead in incident at in-home daycare in Hopkins, Minnesota

HOPKINS, Minn. (FOX 9) - Two people and one child were found dead in an incident at an in-home daycare in Hopkins, Minnesota Wednesday morning. 

Deadly incident at Hopkins in-home daycare 

What we know:

Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson said officers responded to a report of a stabbing shortly after 9 a.m. at Brown Bear Daycare on the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North. Upon arrival, police found a man, woman and child dead in the home. 

There were six other children present in the daycare at the time of the incident. Johnson said no other children were harmed. Officers were able to get all the children out of the home and reunite them with their families. 

Johnson said the victims appear to be members of one family. He said investigators preliminarily believe the deceased man was the perpetrator and took his own life. 

Johnson said this was an isolated incident. There is no threat to the public at this time. 

Daycare family possibly witnessed incident

What we know:

Johnson said a parent who arrived to drop off their children was the one to call police. Police believe the parent witnessed the incident. 

"There's no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child to somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call," the police chief said. "I think we can all relate, [those] who have children and those who don't. This is just a tragic situation anywhere in the world, let alone here in Hopkins." 

Local perspective:

Police have blocked off Tyler Street between 2nd Street and Lake Street as the investigation is underway.

There is now a crime scene investigation vehicle at the scene. There were also multiple police agencies and an ambulance at the scene.

What we don't know:

Police did not release details on the nature of the deaths and if the victims were shot or stabbed. It's also not clear what led to the violence.

Police say they anticipate holding another briefing Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m.

Hennepin County Attorney, Minneapolis Mayor address ‘tragic’ situation

What they're saying:

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty released a statement regarding the Hopkins in-home daycare incident: 

"We’re aware of this morning’s tragic and devastating incident in Hopkins and are working with Hopkins Police as they investigate. Our office’s victim services division is prepared to support the individuals impacted by this incident. We will provide further updates when available."

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the tragedy ahead of his budget address Wednesday morning: 

"I know that our hearts and our prayers are with the people of Hopkins and any families that have been impacted. I have already touched base directly with Hanlon and offer any assistance we can provide. The City of Minneapolis stands with Hopkins. We are not strangers to crisis, and when it takes place, we work together. That’s exactly what we’ll be doing here," Frey said.

Frey said the City of Minneapolis will provide any assistance and resources that Hopkins needs.

Senator Klobuchar reacts: ‘This was the ultimate tragedy’

"Your heart, you just think about these little kids in the daycare. Our daughter went to daycare for a while. You think about dropping your child off, and then thinking about them in this scene of incredible violence and tragedy. You think about the relatives of this family, what they’ve lost with a little child, a mom and what these kids witnessed. No matter who old they are, it’s going to be with them forever.

"The other piece of this as a former prosecutor, and we did a lot on domestic violence, what are the signs ahead going into this? What’s the past with this man in apparently what is a situation where he violently attacked his own wife and child. Those kinds of situations with domestic violence we’ve tragically seen before. This was the ultimate tragedy."
