Austin Firefighters lent a helping hand to a dog having a fairly traumatic afternoon on Tuesday.
Lt. Jim Baker with the Austin Fire Department says they were dispatched to a collision at Riverside and Barton Springs Tuesday afternoon around 4:00.
"Engine 6 was on scene first. We went there as backup for scene security, making sure no other vehicles hit them," Baker said.
While Baker and his crew were on scene, a bystander told them the driver of one of the vehicles involved had ran after his dog who had jumped out after the accident.
So Engine 1 tracked the man and his dog down a couple of blocks away. Unfortunately a car had hit the dog.
"When we got there the owner was actually carrying the dog out of the roadway, brought him over to a parking lot...2 firefighters started assessing the dog and the patient. And the patient, he just wanted us to work on the dog," Baker said.
Lt. Baker says a paramedic talked with the owner while firefighters checked his dog out.
"We tried to tend to the dog. The dog had pretty good lacerations on its head. Bleeding quite a bit," he said.
The Fire Department says they eventually convinced the owner to let them take care of the dog so he could be taken to the hospital.
After bandaging the wounds, firefighters put the hurt dog into the firetruck and drove to a nearby vet clinic.
"One of the guys had gotten up in the engine and the dog came up, climbed up in the engine like he knew exactly what was happening and kind of sat down on his legs...and knew that we were trying to help him," Baker said.
The Austin Fire Department says both the man and his dog are expected to make full recoveries.
