As winter weather continues in the Central Texas area, TxDOT urges drivers to stay off the roads if at all possible. If they must drive, use extreme caution and check drivetexas.org

As the overnight rains begin to freeze, special operations crews with TxDOT have been on overnight shifts looking for any icy trouble spots on the roads.

Crews were out as early as Sunday pre-treating roads with a de-icing solution. According to TxDOT, all major roadways were covered with the treatment by noon Monday.

Maintenance vehicles will continue to treat roads. TxDOT says to stay at least 200 feet behind those de-icing trucks.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations has also been activated in response to any potential hazardous road conditions.

Remember these tips for driving in icy conditions:

  • Slow down. Posted speed limits are for normal weather conditions.
  • Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, overpasses and ramps as they tend to freeze first.
  • Steer into the direction of a skid if you start to slide.
