Two people are dead after a fiery crash on I-35. It happened just before midnight.
Many drivers witnessed it, including a few Austin police officers.
Josh Brown watched in shock late Thursday night as flames shot through a crashed SUV in the northbound lanes of I-35. "I heard a loud crash sound and I knew it was an accident and so I got out of my car and I walked around the building and all I saw was the car completely engulfed in flames,” said Brown.
He was in the P. Terry's drive thru line near 290.
With others already on the phone with 9-1-1, he got his phone out and shot video.
It was a situation that left them feeling helpless.
"There actually happened to be a medic in the line. She immediately hopped out of her car, but before she could get over there the car was already in flames,” he said.
Police would later confirm that two people inside the SUV were killed. "Yeah, that was the first thought that popped in my head is someone was dying and it was very unreal,” said Brown.
Two Austin police officers driving nearby also saw the car ignite.
"From what we've determined so far, an SUV was stopped for an unknown reason in the 57-hundred block of I-35 while stopped, it was struck by an 18 wheeler traveling northbound in the same area,” said Officer Christopher Irwin.
The vehicular homicide unit is investigating. They are asking anyone who saw the wreck, or who got images like brown to call the police department. "It's just crazy you can have something that bad can happen so quickly,” said Brown. "My prayers and condolences go out to the families that were involved in this wreck. It was an absolutely horrific scene."
