14 police officers died in Texas in 2017. Governor Greg Abbott has been a strong supporter for providing better protection for officers and he's expected to announce funding for rifle resistant vests from the Dallas Police Association.

The vests officers wear on a daily basis right now only protect them from handguns like pistols and revolvers.

During the last legislative session, Gov. Abbott signed a bill to pay for the $25 million grant program that's designed to provide body armor to officers across the state. Since that announcement last summer, agencies have been submitting applications to help rifle resistant body armor.
