Italian parsley recalled over possible salmonella contamination

A recall has been issued for Italian parsley because the item is potentially contaminated with salmonella.

Pacific International Marketing ("Pacific") recalled 474 cases of bulk Italian Parsley after being informed that a sample taken on October 6 tested positive. The Food and Drug Administration said the product should no longer be available directly to the consumer, only if the product is frozen.

No illnesses related to the bulk parsley have been reported at this time. The FDA noted that Salmonella can cause severe and sometimes deadly infections in young children, frail or older individuals, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. 

Where was the recalled parsley sold?

Why you should care:

This product was distributed to wholesalers in Arizona, California, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, and Nevada between September 22 and September 25.

According to the FDA, the parsley was sold in cases as 30 or 60 bunches and in 24-count bunches in bags meant for wholesale distribution.

The UPC for the 30 and 60 count bunched Italian Parsley is 40695 80125, located on the twist tie. And the UPC for the 24 count bags is 40695 80120. The shelf life of Italian Parsley is 18 days from harvest, or October 10.

What you can do:

Consumers who have the recalled Italian parsley should throw it away or return it to where the good was purchased for a full refund.
