An Austin man died Friday after a fatal plane crash while preparing for the first-ever New York Air Show.
Air Show officials say stunt pilot Andrew Wright was practicing moves for the show when his plane went down.
Witnesses say the aircraft's tail appeared to snap off moments before the crash. The wreckage landed into the woods, just beyond the airfield.
Ben Granucci works with NYC Aviation and says Wright flew the plane clear of people for safety.
“I'm just really impressed with the pilot for keeping his aircraft clear. There wasn't a lot of people on the ground but there were definitely people on the ground. Once he knew he wasn't going to be able to continue flying it, he did everything he could. What I know of the air show industry. They are focused on safety above everything else.”
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Organizers say tonight's performance will not be cancelled and will be flown in honor of Wright.
