Utility crews blocked off Northeast Dr. at Manor Rd. for most of Thursday morning. They had to put in a new power pole after a violent mid-night crash, the sound jolted Terrell Ockleberry out of bed.
"It sounded like ... thunder, that’s the best way I can describe it, it sounded like thunder,” said Ockleberry.
Ockleberry says he found a mangled car leaning against a tree in his front yard. A passenger was dead and the driver pinned inside, but somehow still alive.
"I told him, I don’t know if he could hear me, I told him I was placing a call to 911, I told him to stay calm, that was the best thing I could do too much because he was cramped inside the vehicle and I didn't know how serious he was injured. Because I couldn't see nothing but his face and car parts,” said Ockleberry.
A few hours later - a few blocks away - police were called back to the area. Residents on Lynridge Dr - around 5:30 - reported gunshots. But that was only the beginning according to a homeowner who asked only to be identified as, “Tommie.”
"We heard banging on the door, back behind this bedroom. We didn't know what that was,” said Tommie.
Police say it was a man who was shot in the back, going door to door, seeking help before collapsing in a yard.
"He was able to point and tell officers it happened down the road, we went down to look for any shell casings and haven't been successful at this point,” said APD Cpl. Joshua Shows.
Residents in this area say the overnight chaos is not out of the norm, it's unfortunately somewhat typical. Among those desperate for a change is Tonya Harrison.
"Because I’m scared for my clients,” said Harrison.
Harrison operates a boarding house along Northeast Drive.
Harrison says she has asked APD for a crackdown on speeders and crime.
"It’s more like past the buck. So I was going to try to talk to my city council to see if we can get more speed bumps, or just have police patrol very now and then, they’re more than welcome to sit in front of my yard take a break if they need to ... It makes us feel safer," said Harrison.
University Hills is part of the 78723 zip code, which includes the Windsor Park neighborhood and the Mueller development. According to crime data reports; offenses in the area include assault, robbery, drugs, hit and runs, indecent exposure, family disturbance and burglary.
In October police were called out almost 600 times and made 247 arrests. November had 536 dispatches with 196 arrests. In the first 4 days of December officers have responded to 59 calls making 18 arrests.
Still under investigation are the recent hold ups at the nearby dollar general store. Janet Chaney, told FOX7 something has to be done.
"I’m kind of worried yeah. It makes me, you know I’ve got two kids, younger kids so it's a scary ordeal,” said Chaney.”
The name of the person killed in the accident here has not been released. The gunman - responsible for the shooting remains at large.
