San Marcos police looking for driver in deadly hit-and-run

Police say a pedestrian was struck was by two separate vehicles, and neither driver stopped to render aid. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The San Marcos Police Department is asking for your help identifying the driver in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian.

The crash happened Wednesday, June 14 in the 1100 block of State Highway 123.

The pedestrian, identified 69-year-old Lenard Green Coleman of Nixon, Texas, was struck twice by two separate vehicles.

Police say first, Coleman was struck by a delivery truck driver in the outbound lanes. The driver did not stop to render aid. Police have identified that driver, but they have not yet been charged.

Police say they believe Coleman was trying to cross the four lane street to go to a convenience store, but only made it halfway, so he started walking along the middle divider. A large box truck hit the victim the first time.

"The victim went down into the oncoming northbound traffic lane about 20 to 30 seconds, according to the witness," San Marcos Police Chief Stan Standridge said.

Then, a silver SUV came from Ebony Street and turned left onto State Highway 123 and hit Coleman a second time.

Police say they were able to track down the first driver based on the company logo on the truck. That person is cooperating, but they need help identifying the driver of the silver SUV.

"This vehicle would have damage possibly with the air dam underneath and obviously any damage underneath the vehicle because the pedestrian was already prone and/or supine on the road when the second vehicle ran over him," Standridge said.

Standridge says there has been an uptick in fatal hit-and-runs.

"Historically we have averaged 8–10 fatalities. This year we're already at 8 fatalities, and we're only halfway through, so it's not boding well for our city. In my 28+ years of policing, I have encountered many hit-and-run fatalities, but never where two vehicles ran over the person and both fled the scene. This is a first for me," Standridge said.

It will be up to the district attorney's office to decide if the first driver will face charges. Police say the second driver could face a felony charge.
