San Marcos police investigating an early morning car theft involving juveniles. Police say one of those juveniles accidentally shot himself in the leg during the incident.

Just before 3:30 a.m. San Marcos police say they responded to a report of shots fired at Hutchison and Moon Street.

Officers found two juveniles. One of the juveniles had accidentally shot himself in the left calf with a sawed off shotgun. The injured juvenile has been taken to the hospital.

During their investigation, police determined that three juveniles were involved in the theft of a silver 2011 Subaru Outback that was reported stolen from the Local Downtown apartment complex. The vehicle had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

Police are questioning the second juvenile and the location of the third believed to be involved is not known at this time.

Both the weapon and the stolen vehicle remain unaccounted for and it's not clear if the weapon was in the vehicle at the time of the theft or if the juveniles had the shotgun with them.

The public is asked to contact SMPD or local law enforcement if the vehicle is spotted. Police also remind the public to secure car keys in a safe place and not to leave vehicles unlocked.

It had been reported earlier that this incident involved the Broadway bank at 301 N CM Allen but San Marcos police say that was incorrect.
