Suspect arrested for fatal shooting on North Lamar

The Austin Police Department has arrested and charged 35-year-old John Paul Rivera Jr. with the murder of 32-year-old Joseph Anthony Aguilar Campos. Police believe Rivera attempted to rob Campos before killing him. 

According to police, officers were dispatched to the 11800 block of North Lamar around 2 a.m. on Friday, June 28 for a shooting that had occurred in a parking lot outside of a hookah and gaming lounge. The victim, Joseph Campos, was found unresponsive inside a vehicle that had crashed into a tree.

APD officers and ATCEMS both attempted life-saving measures, however Campos succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene at 2:18 a.m. The Travis County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and ruled the official cause of death to be homicide.
