A 40-year-old man was arrested Saturday after police say he fired toward officers during a welfare check in Lake Worth, sending bullets into nearby homes and vehicles.

What we know:

Lake Worth police responded around 11:33 a.m. to the 4200 block of Canyon Trail for a welfare check, according to Fort Worth police Officer Daniel Segura.

Officers found Anthony Danenza Jr. in the front yard, police said. Danenza then ran into the home to get a gun and barricaded himself inside, according to police.

Fort Worth police and other agencies responded to assist. Officers established a safety perimeter around the neighborhood, and a nearby home was evacuated as a precaution.

Danenza was seen walking in and out of the home as officers tried to negotiate with him, police said. He then fired his weapon toward officers.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple loud bangs. A bullet shattered a vehicle window, and another struck an upstairs window of a nearby home. A gun was also seen in a driveway after the standoff.

SWAT used tear gas before taking Danenza into custody without further incident.

No officers or neighbors were injured.

Dig deeper:

Danenza is facing nine counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and four counts of deadly conduct, according to Fort Worth police.

The incident is expected to involve two investigations. Lake Worth police will investigate the original welfare check, while Fort Worth police will investigate the shots fired during the standoff.

Neighbors said Danenza appeared to be a friendly person who lived next door and whose children played with their children.

"You never know what people are going through," one neighbor said.

Danenza was expected to be taken to jail after receiving any necessary medical clearance.
