AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Memorial Day is a time to honor those men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country and on Saturday morning a solemn moment was held at the state Capitol as House members read off the names of Texas military men and women who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.
Military veterans, active-duty service members and military families bowed their heads in honor.
U.S. Marine Sgt. Fernando Galvan says the day reminds him of those men and women he fought side by side with who are no longer here.
“I think people sometimes forget what’s it’s all about. When I hear taps it makes me think of people I’ve known that did not make it back,” said Sgt. Galvan.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took a moment to recognize five Texas military members killed while serving since 2017, calling those remembered fearless individuals who will never be forgotten.
“The men and women who have worn the uniform of the U.S. military, we are so grateful for every man and woman who has ever served,” said Abbott.
Galvan says freedom is a precious commodity and is purchased at a great price.
“I think sometimes people forget what’s it’s all about and it kind of just turns into a barbeque and hanging out at the lake,” said Galvan.
Galvan says he hopes that people use today and every day as an opportunity to remember our fallen heroes.
“But it is to remember those fallen service members,” said Sgt. Galvan.
