Two murders in same month at same apartment complex in North Austin

Two people were shot and killed in the span of a month at the same apartment complex in North Austin.

The first shooting happened on Sept. 10 inside the Galewood Gardens Apartments, the victim 45-year-old Antwan Riddle. Austin police located Albert Hardy in a nearby apartment and arrested him immediately.

Then just on Monday, 30-year-old Matthew Lee was shot in the same complex.

"Officers responded to the scene and found a male who was injured in the parking lot here," said APD Cpl. William Costello.

Despite a good Samaritan's efforts, Lee died on scene.

"There have been two homicides here in a very short time," said Costello.

Police are looking for Emilio "Lelo" Ortiz whom they say is possibly connected to the Lee murder. He's 26 years old and could be in the Rundberg area. They are also looking for an approximately 25-year-old woman associated with Ortiz.

Some residents said they heard the gunshots of the murders and the thought of this happening in their own backyard is disturbing. Police say management is working with them to solve the murders.

"There has kind of been a partnership building between the management here. I understand they are new management and very helpful with police investigation," said Costello.

Police are hoping this partnership and awareness of these killings can help them apprehend the suspects and prevent more shootings in this neighborhood and ultimately get to the root of any problems.

"The more people call in the better we can become about being proactive and being in the area instead of just responding," said Costello.
