Austin Police have taken over the homicide investigation on the U.T. campus. The body of a woman in her twenties was found Tuesday morning. We are still waiting on police to release her name.
Two orange roses lay near the site on the U.T. campus where a young woman's body was found.
Classes and rehearsals for Fine Arts students were canceled Tuesday night and a private gathering with counselors was held instead. Overnight, 50 State Troopers, U.T. and local police circled the campus.
University President Greg Fenves released an update Wednesday saying that heavy security presence would continue as investigators work to arrest the suspect in what he calls an "unthinkable crime." Fenves asked APD to lead the investigation. He added that shuttles will be provided for Fine Arts students during evening rehearsals.
"I'm glad that they're coming out and trying to do all they can. I appreciate it," said Eli Kahan, a U.T. student.
But Fenves says students need to watch out for themselves as well, walking in pairs and using well-lit sidewalks. Scary advice for those who already feel uneasy.
"Everyone feels a bit worried about walking alone now just because no one's been found and it's kind of uncomfortable and nerve-wracking. We don;t know what happened, just a lot of unanswered questions," says Julia Hurtado, a U.T. student.
Counseling is being provided for students and faculty.
