Multiple people shot near Howard University
Police said multiple people were shot near Howard University Friday night as the school hosted a homecoming event.
WASHINGTON - Police say five people were shot near Howard University Friday night.
The shooting happened as the school was holding its homecoming Yard Fest.
What we know:
According to officials, the shooting happened in the 2300 block of Georgia Avenue near Howard Place.
The call for service came in just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 24.
Upon arrival, officials found five people injured – three adult men, one adult female and one male juvenile.
Not much is known about the victims, but police say they are not Howard University students, and one is a Morgan State student.
At this time, police say two suspects are in custody.
"We need folks to put the guns down in our city," MPD Chief Pamela Smith said. "We're not going to tolerate individuals coming into our town with firearms."
What we don't know:
Police have not provided any information on the suspects.
They also did not release information on a possible motive in the shooting.
Road closures:
Police set up multiple road closures in the area during the investigation.
Those closures included:
- 2300-2500 Blocks of Georgia Ave NW
- 700-800 Blocks of Barry Pl NW
- 600 Block of Howard Pl NW
- 2300 Block of 6th St NW
They also blocked of a nearby McDonald's, where they say one of the suspects was apprehended.
Howard Homecoming:
Howard University's 2025 Homecoming is being held from Oct. 19-26.
Friday evening's events included a Homecoming Kick Off and a Greek Step Show.
There are several events scheduled for Saturday.
"What we're going to do tomorrow is ensure that we keep those visitors safe," Chief Smith said.
